The fun part of Utena is that everything can have more than one meaning (or no meanings at all)! It's great. :D
I don't think it's spoilery, but basically, the theory is that he has an abusive parent or parents, so - camping in the woods is a better option than going back to his house (and I think he's still expelled from the campus at this point, so can't return to the dorms, either). So, not exactly out-there, mostly just a sad possibility. (And while it's not like him being so quick to slap Anthy NEEDS an explanation beyond him being a teenage jerk, it could be part of what feeds his obsession/dynamic with her, too.)
