AMV: Until There's Something
Jul. 5th, 2025 03:44 pmAn AMV! After many months!!
THE CUSTOMARY NOTES
To counteract my need for every video to be Perfect And Free Of Flaw, I started out pechakucha style (thanks, vexercises!). This means that, except for the very beginning and end, which I adjusted to match the song, everything was (initially) made up of exactly 6-second chunks. Those chunks might have internal cuts from the episode, but I couldn't readjust or take apart anything within them. Then after finishing the whole thing I went back and made some minor timing adjustments and added in one extra short clip. You can still mostly see the six second chunks.
Six seconds is SO LONG! My style imo is very fast so having so many long unedited sections is something I would never do naturally, but it still has a nice effect...
In some ways this is very restricting; but by removing a lot of choices it almost becomes relaxing :D and I didn't end up making the video I thought I would, when I started. I just started with a clip in the middle and asked 'what would fit around this? what would tell any kind of story?' and then by the time I had a bunch of it it was like solving a jigsaw puzzle. And then I considered that I needed to introduce the Lunarians and the combat and the gem shattering for any of the ending to have meaning to a non-fan... I also had the added restriction of only using clips I already had, because I refused to clip anything extra, so by nature it had to be very sword-heavy.
(This is nothing like my usual process btw. I have a general concept in mind at the very least, and usually have a very rough mental outline of what will go in each verse and chorus. I've tried starting with no structure before and it only means frustration; this exercise gives just enough that it's workable.)
I'd been really hesitant to use this song in the past even though I think it suits a lot of stuff, because I thought it wouldn't be well received. But my AMVs are for me! Even if not a single person likes it, I like it :) I do feel bad about completely chopping out the intro though, it starts kind of abruptly. But there's no way I could've supported 30 seconds of intro... what could I even put?
I think this is the second time that I've named an AMV after a lyric instead of the song title, just because 'Red Brick' isn't at all descriptive of ANYTHING. I have no idea what that title came from. Besides, 'until there's something' is the best part of the song!
