Utena Ep 3-5
I know, I just watched the first two episodes yesterday.... I'm normally a very slow watcher but Sundays are the day I hang out with my friend M and watch stuff. I got him hooked yesterday and then we ended up watching a bit more than intended 😅
EPISODE 3
Everyone, please stop slapping Anthy. I'm about to have to start a counter for Anthy Slaps. This is very sad.
I think Chu-chu ate the silica gel packets that came with Anthy's dress. RIP.
Utena's outfit (after she casts off the dress) is her fighting outfit, with the extra epaulettes and little skirt. Usually that only comes after Anthy does her magic before a duel. That's interesting....
(We'll ignore how it's literally impossible for that outfit to have been under the dress. I don't think this show operates on the level of literal possibility.)
I wonder how much Nanami knows. She's red hair guy's little sister, and I believe it's implied she's a first year middle schooler. She thinks that Anthy stole her brother, or is leading him on? Does she know about the whole Rose Bride thing? Or their weird cult? I think not. (Was Anthy ever red hair guy's bride? Unclear.)
EPISODE 4
It's Miki (Mickey?) time. He seems to be a nice boy! Then again, the bar is pretty low compared to Slapping Guy (Saionji) and Creepy Guy (red hair). Wonder how he got into the dueling group as a freshman. And what's up with the stopwatch? I don't want to have to rewind X number of seconds from whenever he stops it, to figure out what made him start it....
Utena: "This dueling stuff is awful.... it made me fail geometry."
Btw, I'm glad to have seen Utena's math test, because it's the first proof we have that these kids ever have classes. They have so much free time to go to the rose garden, or the piano room, or the kendo room, or stand around and gossip in the classroom... :D
The results of the Nanami pranks defy explanation. Either Anthy is very weird or she's a diabolical strategist.
Went back to the episode to confirm something, and I was reminded of Anthy's little animation that she made!! That was so fun. I don't think we'd actually seen her enjoy herself until then (unless she.... actually likes cleaning? I guess it's possible).

DID RED HAIR FUCK MIKI'S SISTER?????? That's messed up.....
ETA: Forgot to mention: sometime around that scene, the random rotating rose.... It has to mean something!!! It has to!!!! Is it an omniscient spirit? A sign of censorship? A "look here" sign (pointed at.... the ceiling of the hallway)?? I think it was white. I forget in what contexts the rose is white. It seemed to have been based on character? I can't be overthinking this... This was the first time it just showed up at a time when I can think of no other justification.
Miki's haunted imaginings were great though. We can only assume he's been captivated by Red Hair's abs.
Since I'm unsure of how long Miki has been in the dueling group for, I'm not sure if I need to be annoyed at him or not. If he's been there for a while: what, have you not noticed how awful Anthy's life is before this? Only now that you're friends and you have a crush on her, you notice? (..... BTW, WHY DID HE HAVE HER PHOTO IN HIS MUSIC FOLDER??? BEFORE THEY STARTED SPENDING TIME TOGETHER??)
I guess there's also the possibility that Saionji acted nice in front of the other guys and only abused Anthy when alone or in front of girls. Or, of course, that Miki is new as of this school year.
Did Anthy manipulate Miki into fighting for her hand, and losing? It kind of seemed like it. (Is she, perhaps, End Of The World??? Ok that's a bit much... UNLESS!!) Or am I reading too much into this, and she's just in a rough position. I mean, even if she did manipulate him on purpose, I can't really blame her. Her life sucks. Why not enjoy yourself, or try and get an ally, or whatever she's doing. HE'S projecting onto her anyway and believes he wants to Save her, but it kind of looks like he just wants to possess her... I mean, arguably he never even asked his sister why she didn't want to play piano again? (Either that or she didn't want to tell him at all. Who knows.) So I don't think we can really call him an ally to women. On the other hand, he's 13.

... I want to say more but I fear accidental spoilers! /o\ Miki sure does have a lot of complicated feelings about his sister that he's not real good at handling - but yeah, being 13 isn't helping. XD
Nanami's attempted animal pranks and their foiling - just amazing. I cackle whenever I think of them, although my real favorite hilarious moments should be coming up soon.

Nobody had told me Utena was funny 😅 I lost it with the snails. And then Utena's just chill about it, and Miki is like "well, I like Anthy, so... 😌 this must be okay." PEAK comedy.
