lizardjay: Asui Tsuyu looking thoughtful (tsuyu)

This one was a struggle T_T but I'm free now! I'm REALLY hoping that I won't regret posting this before the fight actually finishes. I can see it now: the next episode will have incredibly beautiful cinematic shots of Uraraka and Toga fighting in the sea spray with the light of the setting sun, and new backstory flashbacks for both of them...

NOTES
  • The red background in the beginning is very self indulgent. It looks kind of sloppy, BUT! I think the cool factor overrides that and I didn't care to hand-mask everything.
  • Similarly, the blood tears: are they necessary? Absolutely not. But I couldn't resist. They're fun! And they didn't show up long enough in the video so they get the honor of the thumbnail. The tears are blatantly stolen from the crying shot later in the video and I'm hoping nobody pays too close attention to that XD
  • I always love blur effects so much. I probably could've used more!
  • A couple shots aren't perfect, but I'm REALLY happy with the timing in this one. It's very satisfying! (The ones that I'm less happy with are ones that I don't know how I'd do better; sometimes the animation of the shot just doesn't match the song exactly, and even messing around with the speed isn't foolproof. Such is life.)
  • On to the story: I ditched the entire love aspect because I'm not very interested in it, so I feel like this is a kind of AU view of Toga, making her more surface-palatable. But not necessarily any better of a person... The thing I find most interesting about Toga and Uraraka is how they see each other (and also the opposing side, as filtered through/represented by the other one) so I tried to make that the focus. Not that it went perfectly; Uraraka's perspective is kind of the weak point here but I think it's okay. It's not her AMV!
  • I'm pretty sad that none of the PLF arc stuff fit at all. I didn't have a place for it :(
  • Does this count as Toga/Uraraka? I'm unsure. I'm leaning toward yes but I don't normally do overtly shippy videos so it could be seen either way.
  • Congratulations to Twice for being the only man allowed to appear in this AMV.
LONG COMPLAINING FOR MY FUTURE REFERENCE

So, background: I started clipping for a Toga video in fall 2022 (before I even touched the Miruko AMV, btw). I tried a few songs and nothing fit. Of course I also didn't have any season 6 episodes either! Fast forward to this April, I found a song. Great! I started this video.

And it was not coming together. At all. Nothing looked right or felt right, I didn't even know what was going to go in any section except for the intro. Generally when I have so little idea about the shape of a video, I set it aside. Except I was basically feeling that for every video, and this was the only new idea I'd had in ages, Festivids videos aside (thanks, deadlines!). I may have posted a Lee AMV this spring but I actually mostly did that last fall.

So anyway, I wanted to power through. So I opened it up several times over the next couple months to try and pick at it. And it still wasn't working. I think I probably spent 10-15 hours absolutely miserable over this thing. Admittedly I spent a lot of time doing effects and stuff during this time, which I do enjoy.

And then someting clicked last week and I spent another ~10 hours having a great time. Idk! I finally comprehended the point of the video. I wish there was some kind of trigger for this, a thought process or something.... I mean presumably the recent episodes knocked something loose in my brain, but this isn't a tactic I can use on anything else! I have many, many things that I'm stalled on (should I call this editor's block?? it also includes some fic though) but watching new episodes isn't really an option XD

This, what you could call 'idea generation' or 'figuring things out without divine inspiration', is eternally my biggest struggle. I have tried many methods, primarily on my fic but also on videos, for getting past being blocked. At some level, they all boil down to 'just figure something out (via a helpful method or trick)'. The methods and tricks sound nice! But for me they fail to do anything. I clearly missed the memo at some point for how to generate ideas. The best I have right now is to throw something back into the brain soup, wait six months, and pray that something has changed in that time.

Anyway, my thoughts on this aren't very coherent so I'll set it aside for now. But basically: I am very happy I figured this AMV out. I am hoping that I learned something on the subconscious level that will make future videos easier.

Watching videos has been difficult for me lately but today is a good day, so I was finally able to enjoy the tabs with your vids and with your notes -- so cool to see all the thought process going behind it, and the creativity process/deathmatch going on in the background, too :D <3
