AMV: 7 Rings
Jan. 17th, 2025 08:34 pmThis video is UNFINISHED but I think I left it in an okay place. It has a long history of its creation, which I understand is wild since it's not even a minute long, but on its surface it's just a fun ensemble video with a bunch of jokes.
THE LONG HISTORY AND ALSO MY STRUGGLES
I started this in June 2020, less than a month after finishing my first AMV. It was a very ambitious choice of subject at the time and still is too difficult for me to do, which is why it's not done! At the time I fairly quickly dropped it, and then proceeded to make a couple different AMVs in two or three days each. (Can I get that energy back???) Over the years I circled back to this video several times, chipping away at little bits. I even made several AMVs focusing on individual Akatsuki members, almost completely in the hopes of working toward this video. And yet, here we are. After 4.5 years I figured it was time to release it into the wild. I'm hoping I will return to it eventually and finish it off. There are more lyrical jokes to be made!
... It probably isn't apparent from the outside why it's so difficult. There are two main reasons, each one precisely targeted at one of my weaknesses!
1) Clipping. I hate hunting for clips. It is a necessary evil for every video but having multiple characters multiplies the effort. This is an up-front cost that saps my willto live to do a project at all. (This is why the individual AMVs were supposed to help, I would be assembling clips from each of those videos that I could use toward this one). But my passion for the project never got me far enough over this wall.
2) In many ways I am a formulaic editor. Most of my videos are focused on one or two characters, fairly linear, and tell a story. I am not good at making AMVs on 'vibes'. I don't even know how to begin. I have tried many times, and it makes me feel very stupid! This video is somewhat okay because I can anchor myself on lyrical jokes, but I still feel like I'm inherently missing something. I'm really just lacking a fundamental understanding somewhere. It's like using math formulas by memorization because you know you should, instead of understanding their origin and purpose. That's no way to operate! (It's here where it becomes apparent that I am a STEM person XD)
Issue 2 is probably resolved by actually watching and studying more AMVs (I watch an embarrassingly small number of AMVs and do want to change that, but searching for them is so annoying...) People are out there making multi-source AMVs and concept-based AMVs and all sorts of things that I've never touched! I think I'm afraid to seriously dive in, in the fear that my stuff will turn out to be Awful in comparison.... I'm not interested in being the best editor in the world but I still want to feel good about myself 🥲 but comparison is the thief of joy! I put a lot of hard work into my AMVs and I like them a lot and nothing can take that away!!! I must study my craft!!!!!
